JEFFREY Epstein and Ghislaine Maxwell were spotted having a secret dinner in 2016 – years after the Brit socialite says she last had contact with the paedophile, it’s been claimed.

Filmmaker Barry Avrich says he saw Epstein and Maxwell eating together at a ritzy restaurant in Palm Beach and claims he was later threatened when he started to probe the duo’s alleged crimes.

The 57-year-old, who has made documentary films such as The Last Mogul and Prosecuting Evil, said he spotted Epstein trying hard “not to be noticed” in December, 2016, reports the Daily Mail.

Maxwell has claimed she had not been in contact with the Epstein since he was convicted in 2008 of procuring an underage girl for prostitution and of soliciting a prostitute.

But doubt had already been cast as the couple appear to have been emailing each other as late as 2015.

Epstein and Maxwell were claimed to be dining at the Bice Ristorante off Palm Beach’s famous Worth Avenue.

Canadian filmmaker Avrich said at first he didn’t know who they were until he gave the waiter a $20 tip to get some information as he became suspicious.

He revealed “that’s Mr Epstein and his girlfriend” – and the filmmaker then did some research into the duo when he got home.

Mr Avrich said: “I had no idea that I was sitting next to the alleged Bonnie and Clyde of child abuse.”

He added: “The waiters knew what to bring him without him ordering and his conversation was hushed in an intimate way as he kept his head down.”

Epstein killed himself in custody last year, and Maxwell remains in prison facing charges for her involvement in the alleged sex trafficking scheme.

“In my experience researching partners in crime, their perversity and determination rarely dissipates,” Mr Avrich said.

Maxwell has pleaded not guilty to all charges, and her lawyers have accused victims of trying to turn her into a scapegoat for Epstein.

Mr Avrich’s alleged sighting undermines Maxwell’s legal team who claimed that the duo had not been in contact with each other for well over a decade.

Maxwell appears to have distanced herself from Epstein when he was first convicted of sex crimes in 2008, with the two once being romantically linked in the nineties.

Bombshell emails revealed in a trove of unsealed documents however revealed the two appear to have been in contact in 2015.

Epstein tells Maxwell she has done “nothing wrong” in the exchange, while the socialite encourages him to make his relationship with a woman called “Shelley” public.

It has later been claimed this was Manchester-born “spiritual entrepreneur” Shelley Anne Lewis, who is said to have dated the paedophile from 1999 to 2002.

The billonaire said: “You have done nothing wrong and I would urge you to start acting like it.

“Go outside head high not as an escaping convict.”

Mr Avrich claims he was “shaken to the core” when he began to delve into Epstein’s web of child sex abuse as he decided he was going to make a film about him.

He even visited Epstein’s infamous Palm Beach mansion and claims he saw “two young teenage girls” exiting the house in “shorts and tank tops”.

The filmmaker admits he has “no proof” these girls were abused or linked to Epstein, but said they looked “vacant and sad”.

Mr Avrich decided to try and set up a sting to trap Epstein by getting legally aged women – but dressed to appear younger – to go into his house with hidden cameras.

After being contacted by victims, he then received a “haunting call” from a retired Palm Beach cop.

He warned him that he was “playing with fire” and Epstein could “hurt me both physically and financially” as he “played dirty”.

Mr Avrich said he was “scared” – and eventually dropped the investigation as he found it personally too harrowing due to his own daughter, 12.

Ghislaine Maxwell faces charges over her links to Epstein[/caption]

Epstein and Maxwell are alleged to have both been at the centre of a web of child sex-trafficking – with victims claiming they offered up young girls to their powerful pals.

The couple are believed to have met when Maxwell moved to New York in the early nineties following the death of her dad, newspaper mogul Robert Maxwell.

A romantic relationship allegedly eventually became a business one.

Both are claimed to have participated in the sexual abuse of children at Epstein’s lavish properties – including his private island Little Saint James, his townhouse in New York, and his mansion in Palm Beach.

Powerful men have been linked to the couple, with them both known to be pals with Prince Andrew and Bill Clinton.

Clinton and the Duke of York both deny any wrongdoing over their relationship with the couple, and claim they had no idea about Epstein’s network of abuse.

Epstein killed himself in his cell at a New York prison in August last year while awaiting trial on charges – depriving many victims of justice.

Maxwell has been accused of taking part in the grooming and abuse of dozens of underage girls by Epstein.

It is alleged she acted as his madam, pimp or fixer who would recruit victims claiming they were being chosen to be models or be trained as massuers.

The current charges against her relate to allegations by three alleged victims in particular.

Meanwhile, in a letter to US District Court Judge Alison Nathan filed late Monday, Maxwell’s lawyers say they recently learned that “some of these prison guards were, in fact, BOP psychologists who were observing Ms Maxwell and evaluating her for hours each day without her knowledge.

“We are aware of no other pretrial detainee receiving such treatment.”

Her team of attorneys have asked the judge to transfer her to the general jail population as she prepares for her trial next July.

Maxwell was arrested last month when FBI agents raided a property in New Hampshire.
